Tree Inventory SystemsAll
across the Nation, publicly owned trees line our city streets, parks and
right-of-ways. Managing these trees
can be expensive and time consuming. Management
objectives may include avoiding the spread of tree diseases, eliminating
hazardous tree conditions and preventing tree canopies and roots from
obstructing and causing damage to overhead and underground utilities.
Applied
Environmental develops custom GPS-based tree inventory systems to meet
the exacting needs of its clients. We
begin by listening to our clients in order to understand their workflows and to
determine their needs. We then
tailor systems that provide numerous user-friendly functions.
For an organization that already has a functioning GIS, we can develop
GPS-based tree inventory systems as an integral part of that GIS. When
Applied Environmental conducts a tree inventory project, two pieces of
information are collected. The
exact location of each tree as it occurs on the face of the earth is captured
using highly accurate state-of-the-art GPS hardware and software.
The most useful piece of information collected is the data about each
tree located. This is called the
“attribute” information. While
collecting the exact location of a tree, the values for each attribute that
characterize each tree, such as species, diameter, condition, overhead wires and
clearances, are entered into a “pen-based” computer that is connected
directly to a GPS receiver unit. Once
downloaded into a GIS, staff can make very effective management decisions.
With powerful programming, your GIS can automatically generate
maintenance work orders. These work orders can be printed out, E-mailed or even sent
to a pager or Web-based cell phone for immediate attention.
Customer
service is improved with tree inventory systems.
When complaints are phoned in, support staff can identify the trees, view
past maintenance histories and recall next projected maintenance intervals.
With
tree management software, accurate analysis of the costs associated with labor,
equipment and material can be determined. Knowing
the history of expenditures for tree maintenance provides a firm ground for
defending budget requests. Every
municipality wants to limit liability. An
unhealthy tree can be a hazard. Limbs
can fall on cars and homes, causing a city hundreds if not thousands of dollars
per incident. Reduce liabilities
associated with hazardous trees by quickly identifying them in your GIS.
Send a work crew out immediately and correct the problem before a mishap
occurs.
